NSDI Vision: A comprehensive explanation of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) is provided
in the NSDI Framework Handbook, which can be viewed at
http://www.fgdc.gov/framework/frameworkintroguide/.
Area Integrator Concept: This concept, as envisioned by NSDI, is described beginning on page 38 of the
Framework Handbook. MetroGIS's application of the concept is referred to as the regional custodian for a particular
endorsed regional solution.
Framework Themes: These are themes of data, which are common to the needs of the stakeholder community.
Seven themes have been identified as framework data components for the NSDI. The MetroGIS community's regional data
solutions are a local application of this concept. The common information needs of the MetroGIS community, as expected,
are broader than the seven national framework themes, but also include the themes envisioned for the NSDI, with the
exception of orthoimagery in the initial implementation.
Framework Functions: The organizations within the MetroGIS community responsible for each of the seven
NSDI Framework Functions are documented in a separate table for each of MetroGIS's endorsed regional data solutions and
posted on MetroGIS's website. An example is at
http://www.metrogis.org/data/datasets/county_mcd/org_assignments.pdf.
Skyline Concept: The skyline concept is a metaphor utilized in the NSDI community to convey the notion
of accommodating adjacency of data that have varying spatial accuracies in the same solution. For example, seven parcel
datasets with different spatial accuracies for the parcel boundaries are assembled in to a single regional solution.
