The MetroGIS community's regional Planned Land Use Dataset is available free of charge and without licensure
via MetroGIS DataFinder (http://www.datafinder.org/catalog).
This dataset meets one of the MetroGIS community's common information needs. Click on the information need
below to learn more about it, or to find out more about common information needs in general, please see the
About Information Needs page.
MetroGIS's Business Information Needs Process calls
for each regional custodian and MetroGIS to co-sponsor Data User Forums on a
reoccurring basis for each endorsed regional dataset. The frequency of the forums is determined by MetroGIS. The
purpose of these forums is to monitor user satisfaction and identify desired or needed enhancements to the regional
data solutions, insuring they continue to address the needs of the MetroGIS community. The history of these forums for
this dataset is as follows:
- No forums have been held to date.
On May 15, 2001, MetroGIS and the North Metro I-35W Corridor Coalition co-hosted the Regional Planned Land Use
Data Users Forum. (See Overview of MetroGIS's Planned Land Use
Information Need for the activities, beginning in 1997, that preceded the forum.) The consensus of the participants
was that MetroGIS should continue its efforts to operationalize this regional dataset.
On August 22, 2001 the Technical Advisory Team accepted for Coordinating Committee consideration desired data
specifications for the regional planned land use dataset, desired custodial roles and responsibilities, and appointment
of the Metropolitan Council as regional custodian. The Team also created an "Intensity of Use" workgroup and charged it
with reporting its recommendations directly to the Coordinating Committee. This group met twice during the fall of 2001
and identified several "intensity measure units" appropriate to the proposed general land use classification being
measured (i.e. housing units for residential, number of employees for commercial, etc).
On April 10, 2002, the MetroGIS Policy Board endorsed regional data specifications, custodial roles and
responsibilities, and appointed the Metropolitan Council as the regional custodian for the MetroGIS community's initial
regional Planned Land Use dataset. This dataset is believed to be unprecedented, providing a means to quickly see how
each of the 191 communities located in the seven-county Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro Area wants their community to look
like in 2020. It not only gives users the ability to view locally adopted planned land use designations but, more
importantly, it provides a means for users to compare and contrast, on a like-to-like basis, planned land uses among
communities across the entire Minneapolis - St. Paul Metropolitan Area. Click here to view the endorsed
Planned Land Use coding scheme.
On May 23, 2002, a forum was held to launch the Regional Planned Land Use Dataset. More than 50 planners and
GIS staff from the region attended the forum, the goal of which was to introduce the dataset and discuss its potential
uses. Click here to view the forum summary. In August 2002, the dataset was
entered for an award sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). (Click here to view the award submission.)
On September 12, 2002, MnAPA awarded MetroGIS, the North I-35W Corridor Coalition, and the Metropolitan
Council the Planning Merit Award for an Outstanding Planning Tool for their participation in developing the (Twin
Cities) Regional Planned Land Use Dataset. The award was presented at the annual MnAPA conference held in Minneapolis.
